I began photography as a hobby because I enjoy the outdoors and nature. It was a form of mental therapy for me. Through much trial and error I taught myself about photography and realized the pictures needed natural wood frames to further enhance the outdoor beauty. Each frame is unique because of the different types of wood. The frames are essential to seeing the true beauty of nature and it accentuates the outdoor feel of the pictures".

Kentucky artist Randy Lawson combines years of professional training and a lifetime of mountain awareness to create a unique perspective of the world around him. His work lives not only on his canvas but also in the hills and hollows around his Floyd County home. Unlike other Appalachian artists, Lawson does not paint the expected landscapes and rural life scenes- instead he looks to the simplistic wonder of everyday life to inspire and tell the story of his Kentucky experience. Lawson was raised on Simpson’s Branch in Drift, Kentucky the son of a coal miner and devoted mother. The world surrounding him was filled with the simplistic beauty and wonder of mountain living. At an early age, he was inspired to capture the light filtering woods and everyday life events around his boyhood home in sketches and adolescent renderings in paint or other mediums. At the age of fifteen he took his first training in fine art from local artist Ernie Po. During this time, he discovered the joy of sharing his work with family and friends and became a sought after artist of home décor for a growing number of relatives and extended family. At McDowell High Lawson continued his art studies under local artist Johnny Stumbo. It was during this time Lawson looked for new ways to use his skills with a brush and discovered he was a talented sign painter. Lawson soon enrolled in the art program at Morehead State University where he would earn a BA in graphic and fine art. Throughout college, he continued to use his skills as a sign painter to earn money and upon graduation opened his own business Hawkeye Sign Co. in Minnie, Kentucky. But, Lawson was not fulfilled; he wanted desperately to have more time to devote to his true passion – fine art. In 1999 Lawson began teaching and painting commissioned pieces in an effort to get closer to his art. He has taught at Wesley Christian School as art instructor and at The Mountain Arts Center and Roy F. Collier Community Center as private instructor. He has built quite a portfolio including: quality fine art and portraiture, murals, decorative (faux) finishes and designs. His work can be seen in business, nurseries and homes in several counties. Lawson has also juried into galleries and has been honored with awards in art shows in Kentucky. In a short time Lawson has gathered quite a following as he continues to grow as an artist.
